2021-07-01 - Today we put together a small drum composter for the deck. Growing up we always had at least one compost pile on the go so this feels like a natural thing to me. It will be a great way to teach our son about growing things and soil nutrients.
2021-07-03 - Got some flies in there now and I added more moisture. Nothing resembling soil after three days but I am looking forward to that.
2021-07-12 - The compost is pretty wet. Also, smelly. We moved it from the deck to the back corner of the yard. One of the dogs keeps rubbing the compost juice all over himself and it smells horrible. Good times. Still, it is working and we are looking forward to the end result. We probably need more shredded newspaper in there, though.
2021-07-17 - Things are really coming along in the composter. We have started to use shredded paper as "brown material". The side I thought was full broken down significantly, to the point where I am continuing to add to it. We added a scoop of compost catalyst to it which seems to have had a pretty dramatic effect. I also learned you should NOT put thorns in the compost. Fortunately, I didn't tumble the bin after adding them so I was able to remove them all (thistles) easily enough. :)
2021-07-24 - Dogs. Dogs LOVE composter juice. So much that they roll around under the composter and dig up the ground under it and rub it all over their fur so they smell like a composter. We've had to stop using it for now and will soon move it to the front of the house but back between our house and the next, where the dogs can't get at it because of the fence. Then we'll start using it again. This will put it further from the garden but that is what wheelbarrows are for.
2021-08-10 - Moved the composter outside the fence a few days after that last update. It is in the shade most of the time now which seems to be helping it cook. The moisture level isn't bad now and it's filling up. The plan is to keep loading compost in and then use it in the Spring. Once it thaws, I'll start tumbling it daily until the beds are thawed and ready for it. We are also testing the garden bed soil to see what is going on with the soil composition.
2021-11-18 - I am not great at keeping this up to date. With the Winter now fully here, the compost is sitting there, frozen. In the Spring, when things are thawing, I will begin a regular rotation of the barrel. When the garden is ready, I will empty it out and spread it on the gardens and the start a new batch. I like the idea of that long term plan... 🙂
