2021-09-24 Keto and Health
I recently was home visiting my family for the first time in a few years. I was eating meat and potatoes, fast food, and lots of bread. I was also not sleeping well, not walking enough, and feeling really tired. I ended up wrenching my knee in my sleep which culminated a wonderful visit, that wasn't so great health-wise. I was worried about getting exposed to COVID while travelling and ended up with just more chronic health issues.
On my return home, I had resolved to turn over a new leaf. To embrace, again, our healthier eating approach and do my best to eat more veggies, less carbs, and generally less food. And to exercise more once this knee heals up.
Then I got a call from my doctor. I had had blood tests before going away and this was the phone consult we booked to discuss them. I won't get into it but for the first time in my life I got bad news from a blood test that wasn't related to Crohn's or Ankylosing Spondylitis. This time, it was related to health factors I could control much more directly with diet and exercise. I have another test booked in mid-December. I have until then to bring those numbers down.
So I have returned to a Keto diet. I am on day 4 now and starting to feel the benefits I have always know about: clearer head, deeper sleep, lowered inflammation, reduced appetite, and so on. I have lost a few pounds but that is "water weight" and I am not under any illusions about that staying off if I slid back into my old ways.
See, here's the problem. I feel awesome right now. But I know, in a few days, I will be thinking "you've done so well, you can have a tortilla tonight as a snack". And, I'll count the carbs and think "this is fine". Then the next night I might decided to have a little bit of rice with my meal "I'll count the carbs, I am low today". And, then, soon, I am back to eating more carbs. So, probably far less than most people but more than is good for me. So I am going to write here about how this feels and refer back to it.
I have a chance here to stop my health from going off a cliff. I need to do this for my wife, my son, and myself.
